(continued here) that fond of Leopold, and that proposal was sketchy), and then they act like it’s so obvious in canon that this happened when so far all we’ve seen is neglect, and they call anyone who doesn’t agree with them a “rape apologist” and yet the most “rape apologist” arguments I have seen come from their denial of Regina raping Graham! Which freaking happened in the show, heavily implied, very canon, and really should not have been glossed over and should have been addressed instead of joked about by the cast and writers.
Regina is the evil queen because she’s fricking done BAD THINGS. Honestly, for me, that was something I’ve always been iffy about, I don’t like thinking about the fact that they went there because then they turn around and make her sympathetic and expect us to route for her and I feel like it sends the wrong message. Despite this, I still find her sympathetic (which I hate to say about a rapist, but since it’s fiction…) but people acting like it didn’t happen or trying to find all these “alternate explanations” is just really disgusting to me.
The thing that bothers me the most about the “Leopold raped Regina” headcanon is that it seems to have spring up completely as a way to excuse what she did to Graham. I’ve honestly seen people say ‘but that’s all she knows about sex because of Leopold, so it’s not her fault.’
No. Just no. We have not seem Leopold and Regina touch. At all. We know that they sleep in separate rooms. Regina’s chief complain to Tink was that her husband was still in love with his dead wife and ignored her. Eightish years into their marriage he’s still talking about his beloved dead wife and admits that he doesn’t love Regina. He married Regina because he wanted Snow to have a mother.
Leopold isolated Regina, but that’s about all you can canonically blame him for. We don’t even know if he understands Regina didn’t want to marry him. We never see her saying no. To him she’s in her mid twenties, not married, likes his daughter, and would make a good mother. Cora answers, but aren’t all mothers excited for their daughters?
Leopold raping Regina is fanon based on no actual canon fact. However Regina raping Graham is fact. She went so far as to suppress his true memories and give him fake memories of wanting to be with her. People argue that he had free will, but he she literally changed his own thoughts to make him think he wanted her, and when he remembered his true self and rejected her she killed him.
It’s not at all wrong to love Regina. or to ship her with whomever you want. But I don’t understand whitewashing what she’s done. She’s the evil queen because of her actions. isn’t a redemptive storyline so much stronger and more interesting if you admit where she started (rapist, murderer, abuser) and see how far she’s come since then?
Unfortunately I don’t think Graham’s rape/death will be addressed on the show, and I have a hard tim shipping Regina with anyone until that’s addressed.
I completely agree with you sweetie.
